6th Complexity lecture by Aleksandar Bogojević
You are cordially invited to the sixth lecture in SCL Lecture series on complexity which will be held on Monday, 25 November 2024 at 18:00 in the small lecture hall of the Kolarac Endowment. The talk entitled
How Cooperation Emerges from Conflict
will be given by Dr. Aleksandar Bogojević (Institute of Physics Belgrade). The abstract of the talk:
The principal task of physics is the search for deeper and more fundamental relations governing reality. The regularities discovered along this path lie far from everyday experience. This is why, at least at first glance, the regularities uncovered seem to be complex and unintuitive. Four centuries of permanent revolution in physics, however, have shown us that a deeper insight into the fundamental laws of nature has invariably uncovered their ultimate simplicity and comprehensibility.
While everything is encoded in those simple laws, the Universe contains a whole series of extremely complex phenomena (such as ourselves) that we still need to fully comprehend. Because of this, an increasingly important task of modern physics is to understand how complexity arises from simplicity. Our ultimate goal is to classify all the ways in which the complex (unpredictable, exciting) emerges from the simple (predictable, comprehensible). Key examples are the emergence of life, of consciousness, the emergence of the collective from the individual (and vice versa). Today we will principally focus on how cooperation emerges from conflict.
